Years ago some of the Google bosses were mentioning "We're not evil" or the like.
But it's a fact that there are more privacy aware search engines on the internet than Google, Yahoo!, Bing and most others.
Here's some recommendations for privacy aware search engines to use :
https://startpage.com/
Pros :
* Uses SSL by default.
* There's a search+SSL add-on for it for Firefox
https://duckduckgo.com/
Pros :
* Uses SSL by default.
* There's a search+SSL add-on for it for Firefox
And possibly worth a closer look :
http://privatelee.com/ (Cons: Needs javascript on)
http://seeks.fr/ (Cons: No SSL by default, and has self-signed SSL cert)
You can still use Google.com with the googlesharing add-on for Firefox.
See here more info in various languages : https://we.riseup.net/riseuphelp/googlesharing
But Googlesharing only seems to work for google.com and not e.g. google.co.uk etc.
(It's only showing the anonymize+donate remark on google.com and not other google.something site)
